Approximately $40 million was spent on the tank itself in order to build a life-size exterior set of the ship from scratch. In order to reduce costs, several components were created repeatedly, for example the windows were duplicated using computer generated images.
To create a visually cohesive image, other accessories such as ships and funnels were made at 90% scale. With a whopping budget of $200 million, the film was shot at various production studios.
ATLANTIC OCEAN
Capturing and shooting the film was an emotionally demanding task for both the crew and the cast. A group of experienced drivers found their way beneath the depths of the Atlantic Ocean when they discovered the wrecked deck of the original Titanic Canyon located on the southern Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Canada in the North Atlantic seas.

Many of the footage shown in the film was actually shot on the original RMS Titanic, making the sets quite realistic. It was no doubt a great way to portray the originality of the film using the original background. It also somehow brings the cast together as they act out memorable scenes.
Halifax Harbour, Dartmouth
Specifically, the harbor served as the backdrop for the film’s opening scene, which features Gloria Stuart and Bill Paxton’s characters beginning the hunt for the “missing” Heart of the Sea necklace.
Many other scenes including the lead actors were shot in the picturesque harbor port.
Belmont Plaza Pool, Long Beach
This place has witnessed the most traumatic scenes in the history of human love. Jack and Rose’s separation depicted in the film was filmed in this pool.

The pool was a significant backdrop for the scene and captured the outpouring of emotion when Jack and Rose were separated.
Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco
Another famous site that has now been converted into the National Liberty Ship Memorial, Fisherman’s Wharf now functions as a World War II museum. The interior scenes of Titanic were filmed originally as the SS Jeremiah O’Brien.

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA
Halifax, the capital of the eastern Canadian province of Nova Scotia, is an Atlantic port city where several sequences were filmed. Coincidentally, several items recovered from the RMS Titanic are on display at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, located in downtown Halifax at 1675 Lower Water Street.

One of the items is the wooden paneling that served as the model for the log that Rose uses to stay afloat in the film. Many stories state that much of the film was shot in a Halifax cemetery. Three local cemeteries now hold the remains of nearly 100 people who died in the horrific event.
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA
The location was also used by the production team to capture various scenes of the film. The coastal town was successfully used to capture the film footage of the film.
